Its for someone who just started learning Japanese and also the Kanji helps when you are at the point where you start reading and writing. I highly recommend this book to other people. A must-buy dictionary for learning Japanese. It also includes examples in different tenses of almost every concept.
The paper is of good quality, and the print is clear although none too large. Moreover, the size of the book is neither so large nor so heavy as to become cumbersome or inconvenient to use. Many of the typographical errors in the previous separate editions have been corrected in this combined edition. For the advance learner, however, its limited scope of some sixteen thousand words makes it perhaps not quite as useful. Two of its features, i. Kodansha really offered up a great dictionary with this one.
I truly have to disagree with a certain other reviewer on this one. Using romaji is futile in learning real Japanese except for at the MOST basic level, which this dictionary goes far above. The vocabulary listed is FAR from basic, just compare it to similar dictionaries. I must admit that I am only an intermediate student, but this dictionary has put me a head and shoulders above my classmates in sheer lexical ability!
However, any student advanced enough to look up a Japanese word in its kana version is not going to be satisfied with this volume. The problem, I suspect, is that this book is actually a translation of a dictionary written for "juniors," elementary school-aged students. The vocabulary level is too simple for the older or adult student. This is the dictionary for those who wish to seriously study Japanese with as little Romanji as possible. Best option in dictionaries, as far as I know. Having already got the Oxford beginners japanese dictionary, I needed one with a few more words and phrases. This uses furigana small hiragana above the kanji rather than repeating the japanenes in hiragana and then kanji. Certainly there are lots of new enries and many more phrases, but I tend to have to use a magnifying glass to read the kanji or hiragana, the former because they are complex and the latter because they are now small to fit above the kanji.
Ok, I am now 52 and need reading glasses anyway - but I tend to rely on the Oxford first simply because of this. The book uses no colour, which I liked about the Oxford. Its chunky, not a really large book, only 14x19x5 cm, certainly not pcket size. There is a small appendix, but very sketchy indeed.
